Storyline: After being in jail for 14 years, Thilagan gets out of prison on parole. During his parole time, Thilagan, who was previously an ambulance driver, faces trouble reintegrating with society. Why was Thilagan jailed all these years, and how is that connected with what he does on his present release from jail?
Siren Movie Review: In Siren, Jayam Ravi’s Thilagan gets out on parole after spending 14 years in jail for a crime that he hasn’t even committed. When he is released, old rivalries are reignited, and new conflicts emerge. Meanwhile, a police officer named Nandhini (Keerthy Suresh) starts suspecting that Thilagan has been involved in the killings of a few influential people during his parole time.
Ruben’s editing is another evident plus. The film follows a non-linear narrative style. The way scenes of the protagonist’s past and present are intercut and presented elevates an otherwise straightforward plotline. The moment when Jayam Ravi enters his house for the first time in 14 years is intercut with the first time he and his wife (Anupama Parameswaran) stepped into the house post-marriage.
Similarly, the protagonist seeing his daughter after he is released on parole is intercut with scenes of him seeing her when she was born. These are a few of the aspects of Siren that make it evident that this is not at all a lazily made film. Even what we perceive to be random moments, like a group of boys harassing a girl and a woman searching for a missing person, serve a purpose in the film.
Of course, it also has to be noted that in many places, especially towards the climax, there are clear cases of convenient writing. Things just conveniently happen in this film for the story to proceed forward. For instance, when Thilagan’s daughter is teased by a group of boys in a public space, he overhears the conversation she has with her friends from a mile away.
The scene in itself and the eventual payoff of these scenes aren’t the problem. Rather, the issue lies in the build up of these scenes, which are more convenient than an effective piece of writing. GV Prakash Kumar’s songs work way better than his background music. The BGM that accompanies the Yogi Babu comedy track tries way too hard to underline the comedy.
In the first half of Siren, Keerthy’s Nandhini constantly says that she hasn’t killed anyone. In the second half, Jayam Ravi’s Thilagan is the one who is recurringly saying the same dialogue. But while the latter gets a fleshed-out character, Nandhini fails to emerge as a fully formed character. She is intriguing and strong, but also very one-dimensional in the way she is written.

Speaking of the cast, there are no standouts or star performers in the film. The performances are unanimously forgetful. With dialogues like ‘There are two angels in a man’s life, one who is born for him and another who is born to him,’ it's clear that Siren goes for a slightly melodramatic tone where the emotions are heightened. The film will work for those who prefer those elements in a film, but it won't work for those who don't.
