Toby movie review: Newly appointed station inspector, Sampath (Bharath GB), arrives at Thamas Katte, a small quaint village in Coastal Karnataka, which is prepping for the village festival - Maari jatre. Jenny (Chaitra J Achar) comes to the police station looking for her father (Toby), who has been missing for two days. Intrigued by Jenny’s unique attire, Sampath goes looking for Toby, an eclectic man, who is often feared by villagers for his uncanny nature. As Sampath starts enquiring about Toby, some refer to him as ‘Shaitan’, (devil), while some call him a dumb angel with a childlike innocence. Can the devil and angel co-exist within one man? Or should one peel off more layers to find the real Toby?
Toby is an abandoned child. The only thing he knows is fighting for survival. He loses his voice during an incident that happened to him as a child and loses his voice. Father Iglesias, at the local church, (Yogi Banekshwar) embraces him and shows him affection, which is a first for him. Toby creates a small world for himself with people who truly understand the words behind his silence - father Iglesias, Damodara (Gopalkrishna Deshapande) a mortuary worker, Jenny (a baby he found by the pond and took in as his own), and Savitri, a sex worker. It’s a small world and Toby is happy in his world, that is until Ananda meddles with it.
Toby, the film, thrives on performances and technicality. Raj B Shetty is a beast and delivers a very powerful, authentic performance in each and every scene. He has no dialogues but his acting ensures that nothing goes missing in translation. Writer Raj B Shetty also equally shines as he goes on to add layers to several scenes. Raj is Toby and vice-versa. Chaitra proves herself as an exceptional actor. She gives an equally powerful performance as a tough woman who has to take care of a man child who has only put her through misery. Their performances truly blur the line between acting and reality. Young Jenny’s one-liners are wonderfully penned; they also provide the much-needed comic relief. Samyukta’s monotone performance - of being nonchalant - is the result of seeing the society from close quarters. Her small character has very less to say but a lot to communicate.
The scenes are artistically captivating but lack depth. Praveen Shriyan’s cinematography adds layers to the film. The wide shots beautifully encapsulate the beauty of the nature and brutality of Toby. Composer Midhun Mukundan is the unsung hero. Since the film’s songs were not released, audiences get to see the magic on the big screen. The film has two songs, one in each half, and they merge with the movie like magic.

The movie doesn’t fit into any genre. It has a little bit of everything. However, the slow-paced narration is a huge setback for Toby that comes with a very predictable premise. There is no surprise element or an overwhelming experience. The climax passes off very ordinarily (thanks to the trailer!) without giving the audience a cathartic act. The film builds up a wonderful pre-climax only to fall flat towards the end.
It’s a norm in every village in South India to have a Maari Gudi (Maari temple). Often found on the outskirts of the village, the Goddess is revered as the protector of the village. She is also not invited into the house because when she gets angry, she can only be calmed down after bloodshed. Toby is like Maari.
All in all, Toby is a good experience, but it will leave you craving for more. Also, there’s a small surprise for Garuda Gamana fans in this Raj-verse!
