Review: The Grey 2024 Review: A series of disconnected events set the stage for this sci-fi horror. A bug-like larva enters into a teen's body through his ear at a night club and he suddenly breaks into a killing spree as his head splits open to reveal slithery tentacles. In another part of the town, a young girl, Jeong Su-in (Jeon Su-nee), working at a supermarket finds herself subjected to a customer's ire over a missing price tag. On her way home, she is attacked by the same customer on a deserted road. But despite him stabbing her with a knife, it is him that the police find dead at the site. At the hospital, Su-in isn't quite sure of what happened after she was stabbed. The senior detective working on her case, Kim Cheol-min (Kwon Hae-hyo), happens to be the same person who had rescued her from an abusive father years back and the two share a special bond. And in another story fragment, Seol Kang-woo (Koo Kyo-hwan), a mobster, is trying to trace his missing youngster sister, while also on the run from a rival gang.
Enter Team Grey from Seoul at the local police station, armed with heavy artillery and information on the parasitic monsters on the loose in South Korea. As the operation lead, Choi Jun-kyung (Lee Jung-hyun), reveals, these parasitic larvae dropped all over the world a few months back. And they enter a human body through the mouth, ears or nose, taking total control over the host's brain and feeding off it. Detective Cheol-min and his assistant, Kang Won-seok (Kim In-keok) are now part of this covert operation to hunt down the monsters. On the other hand, Su-in starts having some bizzare experiences and she is made aware by a parasite who is using her body as a host, that she is now a mutant. The parasite was unable to completely take over her brain, because Su-in was seriously injured when it entered her body and it had to protect her first. Now both personalities reside in Su-in, making her an all-powerful entity, who can choose to be on any side she wants, the humans or the monsters. But on the flipside, both sides now view her as the possible arch enemy. The only person she can trust is Cheol-min and along the way, Kang-woo also becomes an ally.
'Parasyte - The Grey' packs in six episodes in its first season and is a live-action adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki's popular Japanese manga, Parasyte. Directed and co-written by Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) for the streaming platform, the setting moves to South Korea among other deviations from the source material. The series builds on the atmospherics - grey, gloomy and dark right from the start. We get the first glimpse of the parasitic monster's workings as well, with the head splitting into flared tentacles - one that can become long and sharp at will to kill humans in a jiffy. And there is definitely plenty more of that through the next few episodes and elaborate action set-pieces as the task force,Team Grey and the monsters clash at several points. The storyline also blends in betrayals, emotional bonds, dysfunctional relationships, morality, lust for power and organisational control.
However, the series never quite goes beyond the surface and explores the theme of human existence versus the planet's survival to its full potential. At the onset of the first episode, a voice-over tells us that if the population of the humans could be cut to half, the world has a better chance of surviving.

This is then followed by the infiltration of the parasitic larvae and the narrative gets bogged down by the human-parasite conflict and there is a generous splash of gory and gruesome visuals. While the vfx and action sequences are definitely impressive, the horror doesn't quite scare and the sci-fi doesn't intrigue enough. However, the performances by Jeon So-nee, Kwon Hae-hyo, Koo Kyo-hwan are quite good and affecting. On the whole, 'Parasyte - The Grey' is a mixed bag that works in parts.
