Lootere 2024 Full Series Review: Vikrant Gandhi (portrayed by Vivek Gomber), having taken over his father-in-law's prosperous enterprise, now reigns as Somalia's uncontested kingpin. Yet, beneath the surface, a rebellion is brewing, and Vikrant's destiny is on the brink of a dramatic shift. Central to this upheaval are the imminent Somalian port elections and a hijacked Ukrainian ship carrying valuable cargo and an Indian crew, now caught in the web of Vikrant's frantic efforts to reclaim his multimillion-dollar shipment amidst a sea of troubles.
Helmed by Hansal Mehta, the mastermind behind riveting series like 'Scam 1992' and 'Scam 2003 - The Telgi Story,' and captained by his son Jai, this series introduces Vikrant as an unlikely protagonist. His excessive ambition and recklessness, driven by a voracious appetite for wealth and dominance, propel the story forward. However, unlike his previous roles, Vikrant's character struggles to garner sympathy this time, as his actions trigger a cascade of violence.
'Lootere' distinguishes itself from the outset with its unique settings: the tumultuous land of Somalia and the isolation of a cargo ship adrift at sea. The show captivates with its suspense, unpredictability, and excitement, swiftly advancing the plot through the initial episodes to lay the groundwork for an intense hijacking saga. Echoes of Tom Hanks' acclaimed 2013 film 'Captain Phillips' resonate in some of the maritime scenes.
Yet, where 'Captain Phillips' maintains a steady pace, 'Lootere' occasionally lapses into slower, more repetitive sequences. The ongoing strife among Somali pirates, Vikrant's chaotic interactions with his treacherous allies, and the crew's suffering tend to drag on across the series' extended episodes. Despite this, the show is punctuated by intense, action-packed moments both at sea and ashore, delivering a raw, violent, and blood-drenched narrative not suited for the squeamish. The writers missed an opportunity to delve into the underlying causes of Somalia's volatile socio-economic conditions, opting instead for a superficial treatment to heighten the drama and violence.
Vivek Gomber shines as the audacious and impeccably crafted Vikrant Gandhi, a character who commands attention and defies indifference, thanks to Gomber's ownership of the role. Regrettably, Vikrant's vulnerabilities, including his relationships with his wife Avi (Amruta Khanvilkar) and son, contribute to the narrative's complexity and occasional confusion amidst an already crowded cast. The inexplicable dynamics between these characters add to the show's density. The series is propelled by high-octane action sequences captured masterfully by Jall Cowasji, both on the ship and in Somalia's gritty streets. Rajat Kapoor delivers a measured performance as the ship's captain, while Aamir Ali leaves a strong impression in a brief but impactful role. Chandan Roy Sanyal excels as a volatile, privileged playboy, and the Somali cast performs with remarkable consistency, with Martial Batchamen Tchana standing out as the formidable Pirate leader Barkhad.
