Patna Shukla (2024) Full Movie Review: Sitting outside the Patna civil court with a string of male lawyers, Tanvi Shukla (Raveena Tandon) is regarded as just another housewife with no real talent to argue cases. Her handmade laddoos and ghar ki rasoi are more famous amongst her colleagues and her husband Siddharth Shukla’s (Manav Vij) friends than her legal expertise. Even her own husband isn’t very encouraging. But all of it is put to test when a 22-year-old student Rinki Kumari (Anushka Kaushik) approaches Tanvi to fight a case for her. Rinki feels that the university has unfairly failed her and wants them to re-examine her papers. But as Tanvi takes up the case, she soon discovers that Rinki’s case is not an isolated one. And that there is a much larger scam that has multiple players involved.
Predictability is surely not one of the strongest aspects of this film. Yet, the way writer-director Vivek Budakoti (along with his co-writers Sammeer Arora, Farid Khan) executes a simple story without losing his grip on the narrative, is commendable. The nondescript setting of Tanvi’s simple middle-class home and work life in Patna is depicted with finesse and minimalism. In fact, despite being a courtroom drama, the execution of the entire screenplay is void of any jarring elements that could have taken away from the crux of the story and its messaging. This non-dramatic and understated way of telling a simple yet important story is what works in its favour.
The film rests largely on Raveena Tandon’s able shoulders, who delivers a restrained performance, devoid of any loud theatrics. The actress doesn’t miss a beat in depicting Tanvi’s strong resolve and vulnerability. Despite a slow pace, Raveena’s flawless act keeps the viewer interest alive. Manav Vij is well-suited to play Siddharth, a man who has to strike a balance between his wife’s unwavering stand for what’s right and what is practically possible in a small town. The late Satish Kaushik once again gives a memorable performance as a lower court judge, who is easy-going, but cannot be taken for granted. Some of the characters are predictably cliched in the way they are written but thankfully they are performed by able actors. Like Jatin Goswami, who stands out as a dapper youth icon and a conniving politician Raghubir Singh. And, Chandan Roy Sanyal, who is convincing as the pompous defence lawyer Neelkanth. The rest of the cast performs well. The film’s music and background score are all but forgettable.
‘Patna Shukla’ is a socio-legal drama that may not find a very broad audience, as it takes up a very local issue. But the implications of an education scam like this can be far more dangerous than they seem. The film stays focused on its protagonist and a handful of other characters without delving deeper into the nuances of the academic racket it talks about. But within its limited scope, this courtroom drama packs enough punch to deliver a story of grit, determination and right to education.
