Joshua Review: Whenever a new project by an eminent filmmaker is out, the comparisons aren’t just limited to other films released at the same time or films made previously in that particular genre. The comparison also extends to the filmmaker’s filmography until then and where their latest outing ranks in that mix.

This is a factor that works for and against Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha. On the one hand, when we associate this film with other works in Gautham Vasudev Menon’s celebrated filmography, Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha feels like a disappointment. On the other hand, we, the audience, would have been pulled out of this film way sooner if we were unaware of who directed it.
There is a sense of inauthenticity that creeps in throughout the film. This inauthentic feel applies to both the film's crime and romance elements. Even though the leads, Varun Kamalakannan and Raahei, have great chemistry and the well-choreographed action sequences are tastefully done, the world of Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha feels spurious.

Even how the title of the film is referenced by a character feels like it is only said for the title card to pop up onscreen. Otherwise, the dialogue doesn’t feel authentic to that moment at all. Also, when the leads romantically sing to each other, ‘Vinnaiyum thaandi poovom Vaaruvaaiyaa’, the reference here is evident but feels contrived.

In the film, the protagonist, an assassin turned bodyguard named Joshua (Varun Kamalakannan), is assigned the task of protecting his former lover Kundhavi (Raahei), as her life is in danger. His love for Kundhavi leads Joshua to change his profession from killing people to protecting them. The man is willing to go to any lengths to protect Kundhavi’s life.

The makers deserve credit for taking up a frail basic plotline and creating a charming film that lasts more than two hours. One of the merits of the film is that neither the romantic portions seem to take anything away from the thriller portions nor vice versa. Even though, in between, there are times when the film fails to keep you glued to the screen.

There are also some laugh-out-loud one-liners in the film that help bring a smile to your face. Coming to the leads, Varun fares better in action than in portions where he is expected to be romantic and emotional. Raahei gives an ineffective performance. The setting makes you care more for her character than her performance, which honestly isn’t bad but also doesn’t leave an impact. It also has to be noted that both leads lip-syncing the song Naan Un Joshua feels very half-hearted.

Meanwhile, Krishna Kulasekaran literally holds your attention, even in a limited role. It takes a while for Dhivyadharshini to sync into the film’s setting but when she does merge into the film’s world, the actress gives a solid performance.

All in all, Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha works largely due to its action set pieces and music. Joshua, as a character, may be formidable but the same cannot be said about this film.
